My clients in Cambridgeshire are looking for a Thermal Chemist: High Conductivity Materials.

This role is commutable from Cambridge, Bedford, St. Neots, Huntingdon, Sandy, Yaxley.

JOB PURPOSE:
This role is within the company's High Thermal Conductivity Materials team, whose aim is to develop composite materials for the thermal management of electronics. The role will support the project’s material development with the synthesis of thermally conductive polymers and the functionalisation of inorganic fillers to be incorporated into a thermally conductive composite. In addition, the role will involve the development of new innovation projects through collaboration with colleagues to investigate cutting edge research topics and global materials development challenges with the aim of proposing new projects for the company.

KEY RESULT AREAS:
• Synthesis of thermally conductive polymers and recommendations for structural modification to improve performance.
• Design, synthesis, purification and characterisation of functionalised inorganic fillers.
• Recommend external organisations to gain access to facilities, equipment or external experts to supplement company internal capabilities where required and work with them to complete the evaluation or material development.
• Contribute to technology development proposals to improve material performance.
• Widen company Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio by inventing novel concepts and technical solutions.
• Contribute to wider company innovation activities to develop new project proposals based on technological needs, trends or emerging technologies, to include unique technical solutions.
• Development of scientifically sound hypotheses for increased device and material performance.
• Effective communication with all team members and the wider organisation to distribute results, discuss problems, and provide next-step recommendations to progress the projects.

MAIN ACTIVITIES:
• Working closely with the High Thermal Conductivity Materials team to develop new materials which meet the application specification.
• Synthesis, purification, and characterisation of novel materials to meet technical performance requirements.
• Produce proposals to adapt and improve novel materials according to performance and specification requirements.
• Identification of Intellectual Property (IP), filing of invention disclosures, and providing feedback to ensure high quality patent applications.
• Carry out or oversee experiments at partner organisations where in house evaluation or synthesis is not possible.
• Rigorous analysis of experimental results to draw conclusions and propose directions for further material development or collaboration.
• Clearly report findings and formulate recommendations either within or outside the organisation.
• Take an active part in ideation events to develop new project ideas aligned with market needs, sustainability goals, business alignment and novel material ideas.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

Essential:
• A PhD in Organic Chemistry, or alternatively a Chemistry degree coupled with equivalent relevant industrial work experience.
• An inquiring mind, with a broad interest in current trends outside current speciality, particularly towards materials development.
• Track record of the design and successful synthesis of novel organic molecules to meet a technical need.
• The ability to follow and accurately record data for controlled processes.
• An ability to acquire new skills and areas of expertise.

Desirable:
• A demonstrable interest in developing technical solutions across a range of applications.
• Experience in controlling the interaction between inorganic particles and organic materials is highly desirable.
• Experience of incorporating materials into device structures to demonstrate desired functional properties is highly desirable.

Salary to circa £39k per annum but flexible for the right candidate.
