We’re looking for an Open Product Packing Room Operative to work within the warehouse team in Darton, Barnsley.

We are looking for hard working individuals who are enthusiastic, enjoy a challenge and take pride in working to high standards to join our packing team.

As a Packing Room Operative, you will be trained and skilled in multiple operational areas. From operating packing machinery, including flow wrappers, baggers and multi-head weighers, to ensuring products are packed safely and efficiently, you will play a crucial part in the processing of products through the operational lifecycle.

The role will require consistent adherence to strict food safety, hygiene, allergen and contamination control procedures within a high care and high-risk environment. You will be responsible for ensuring products meet the required quality, safety and legal standards at all times.

The role may involve working with ambient, chilled and frozen products, and you will be provided with the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

There may also be occasions when the packing room is not in operation where you will support warehouse activities, including working within an Industrial Freezer.

Details of location, pay and shift pattern:

Hours: 40 hours per week working 7am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

Location: Darton, Barnsley S75 5NH

Rate of Pay: £12.75 per hour, paid on a four weekly basis.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Depending on operational need, you will be required to operate in multiple different areas, conducting the following work types. 

Packing Operations

• Operate flow wrapping and bagging equipment safely and effectively.
• Have knowledge of allergen control requirements to mitigate the risk of cross contamination
• Have working knowledge of average weight legislation requirements and how to use equipment to control
• Operate and monitor multi-head weighing systems to ensure accurate product weights.
• Carry out product feeding, packing quality and weight checks throughout production runs.
• Set up, adjust and clean machinery in line with standard operating procedures.
• Complete product changeovers accurately and efficiently.
• Ensure all packing materials are used correctly and product presentation meets customer requirements.

Food Safety & Quality

• Adhere to all High Care and High Risk food production standards, including all instructions provided by the technical or planning teams on how to handle specific stock, hygiene requirements and changeover requirements.
• Follow hygiene, handwashing, gowning and contamination control procedures.
• Conduct quality checks on packed products, labels and packaging.
• Report product defects, foreign body risks or food safety concerns immediately.
• Complete all required food safety and compliance documentation accurately.

Operational Performance

• Achieve packing output, efficiency and waste targets, and record issues for help to achieve targets
• Minimise product giveaway through accurate operation of weighing equipment.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives within the packing area.
• Work flexibly across packing lines and operational areas as required.

Housekeeping

• Maintain high standards of cleanliness in accordance with GMP requirements.
• Support cleaning activities and hygiene schedules.
• Ensure workstations remain organised and free from contamination risks.

You may be requested to work in other operational areas, you will be expected to react to the demands of the operation.

Requirements

You will need to have/be:

• Experience of working with an Operational environment
• Ability to comply with production recording
• Level 2 food safety

• Ability to work in Cold Store (up to -20degrees) environment. 

• Ability to handle operational changes to work within another area. 

• Computer literacy, able to use a warehouse management system and Microsoft office software. 

• A drive and focus for Health & Safety as well as Food Safety. 

• Teamwork focus as well as communicational aptitude. 

• Keep up to date with all relevant training for all operational areas.
