SEN Teaching Assistant

About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate, patient, and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and inclusive educational setting in Barnsley. This rewarding role involves supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN), helping them access learning, build confidence, and achieve their full potential.

The successful candidate will work closely with teachers and SEN professionals to provide tailored support for pupils with a range of additional needs, ensuring they can thrive both academically and socially.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEN.
• Assist pupils with accessing the curriculum and participating in classroom activities.
• Support the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and tailored learning strategies.
• Promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
• Help pupils develop communication, social, and independence skills.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and other support staff.
• Monitor and record pupil progress, reporting observations to teaching staff.
• Assist with personal care and mobility needs where required.

Requirements

• Previous experience supporting children or young people with Special Educational Needs is desirable.
• A genuine passion for helping pupils overcome barriers to learning.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain calm, patient, and adaptable in a variety of situations.
• Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
• GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English and Mathematics (or equivalent).
• Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

• Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
• Experience supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, SEMH, or speech and language needs.
• Team Teach or other behaviour management training.
• First Aid qualification.
• Experience working within a school, specialist provision, care setting, or alternative provision.
