What we’re looking for…
As a Head of Engineering, you will champion world-class manufacturing performance at our flagship site, combining strategic vision with a visible, sleeves-rolled-up approach on the factory floor!
Reporting directly to the Site Director and sitting on the Site Leadership Team, you will set the engineering agenda, drive multi-million-pound capital projects, and pioneer continuous improvement across high-speed packaging lines. Just as importantly, you are a grounded leader who stays close to the action—ready to step down onto the line shoulder-to-shoulder with your technicians during critical overhauls or complex faults. If you are an empowering, technically astute leader who can command the boardroom while earning genuine respect on the shop floor, we want to hear from you.
Your responsibilities will include…
- Strategic Leadership & Budget Ownership: Partner with the Site Director to set engineering strategy and execute the site budget, balancing cost control with high-availability manufacturing goals.
- Asset Reliability & Proactive Maintenance: Drive plant uptime, MTBF, and OEE by evolving PPM routines, overhaul planning, and modernising engineering stores and inventory control.
- Hands-On Floor Support & Technical Mentorship: Maintain an active presence on the line, stepping in alongside shift teams to resolve complex breakdowns, guide line-side troubleshooting, and model operational excellence.
- Capital Project Delivery: Lead end-to-end Capex programmes from business case justification and equipment procurement through to on-site installation and successful commissioning.
- Cross-Functional CI & Efficiency: Collaborate daily with Production Managers to embed TPM and Lean methodologies, reduce changeover times, and eliminate recurring operational bottlenecks.
- Culture, Coaching & Matrix Leadership: Inspire and develop both core site engineers and shift-based teams, fostering an inclusive, high-accountability environment focused on technical growth.
- Safety, Quality & Regulatory Compliance: Act as site champion for Quality, Safety, and Environment (QSE), managing statutory compliance, contractor safe systems of work, and site utility resilience.
What you’ll bring...
The successful candidate will have;
- Extensive engineering management experience leading teams within a high-speed FMCG or Food & Beverage manufacturing environment.
- Proven ability to balance strategic management with a hands-on, line-side presence when technical escalations and critical overhauls require direct support.
- Deep technical expertise in high-speed packaging equipment, automated bottling/canning lines, and modern asset reliability/PPM systems.
- Track record of scoping, managing, and delivering multi-million-pound capital projects safely, on budget, and on schedule.
- Proven leadership capability to mentor shift technicians, influence cross-functional operations, and drive a culture of continuous improvement.
- NEBOSH qualification (Certificate or Diploma) with comprehensive knowledge of machinery safety and contractor management regulations.
And it would also be great if you can demonstrate:
- A degree in an engineering discipline alongside hands-on proficiency with CMMS platforms (e.g., Mainsaver) and AutoCad.
- Formal accreditation or practical mastery in Lean/TPM methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma, SMED, 5S, root-cause 8D analysis).
- Prior experience managing site infrastructure, facilities, and utilities (effluent, steam, compressed air, refrigeration) within an ISO-accredited plant (9001, 14001).
