

Head of Systems Safety & Assurance
Summary
A successful British rolling stock company and specialist developer and asset manager of sustainable rail fleets across the UK is looking to hire a UK Safety Assurance Lead / Head of Safety & Assurance to join their team in London and bring key expertise to their systems safety and assurance function.
As Head of Safety & Assurance / The UK Safety Assurance Lead you will;
- Work as an embedded member of the UK management team, the role supports the UK Managing Director in ensuring that rail assets remain safe, compliant and fit for operational service throughout their lifecycle.
- Lead the delivery of lifecycle safety assurance activities and stage-gate reviews, ensuring that safety, engineering assurance and safety-by-design principles are appropriately considered during asset origination, procurement, design, introduction into service, operation, engineering change, re-leasing and disposal.
- Provides assurance to the UK Managing Director regarding the effectiveness of asset safety arrangements and supports the Director of HSSQE in providing assurance and reporting to Group governance bodies, including SPV Boards and the group supervisory board.
- Be responsible for implementing, maintaining and continuously improving the business' UK Safety Assurance Management System
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Significant experience in a regulated, safety-critical engineering in railway or transport environment.
- Experience of engineering safety assurance, system safety, technical assurance or safety verification activities.
- Experience of asset lifecycle management and assurance processes.
- Experience of risk management and hazard management in complex engineering systems.
- Experience of presenting technical and safety information to senior management.
- Strong understanding of safety governance and assurance arrangements.
- Excellent communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable
- Rolling stock, rail systems or wider transport industry experience.
- Experience of Common Safety Method (CSM-RA) processes or equivalent system safety methodologies.
- Experience of engineering change assurance.
- Experience of audit, assurance or regulatory compliance activities.
- Understanding of emerging cybersecurity issues affecting operational technology and transport assets.
Qualifications
Essential
- Degree in Engineering, System Safety, Physical Sciences or a related technical discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng), or demonstrable progress towards Chartered Engineer status with a recognised professional institution.
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering or Asset Management.
- Professional qualifications in risk management, audit or assurance.
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent health and safety qualification.
Salary is negotiable but will be dependant on level of experience and expertise (Upwards of £100,000) plus package including;
