Job Type: Full Time, Term Time Only
Start Date: September 2026
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, school hours
Pay: £98–£120 per day, depending on experience

Protocol Education are recruiting for a Sports Teaching Assistant to support young people with SEMH and behavioural needs in South Shields.

This is a brilliant opportunity for someone who loves sport and enjoys working with young people.

You don't need to spend the whole day in a PE kit — you'll support pupils across the school day, using your sporting background and personality to help build relationships and encourage positive engagement.

The role:

  • Supporting pupils across the school day
  • Assisting within lessons
  • Supporting PE and physical activity
  • Working 1:1 and in small groups
  • Encouraging pupils to participate
  • Supporting positive behaviour
  • Helping pupils develop resilience
  • Encouraging teamwork and communication
  • Supporting emotional regulation
  • Building positive relationships
  • Acting as a positive role model
  • Supporting pupils during less structured parts of the day
  • Helping pupils develop independence and confidence

Sporting backgrounds we're particularly interested in:

Football | Rugby | Boxing | Basketball | Athletics | Cricket | Tennis | Swimming | Martial Arts | Fitness | PE | Gymnastics | Other competitive or recreational sports

You don't need experience in all of these — we're simply looking for people who have a genuine interest in sport and can use that enthusiasm to engage young people.

DBS

Candidates with an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service are preferred, but this isn't essential. If you don't currently have one, you'll need to be able to apply for a new Enhanced DBS check.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
