About the Opportunity
Our client is a leading project and programme management consultancy delivering large-scale mission critical infrastructure across Europe. Due to continued growth and the expansion of several hyperscale data centre programmes in Germany, they are seeking an experienced Project Manager with a strong background in high-voltage (HV) substations to join their Berlin team.
This role will focus on the delivery of critical utility infrastructure, including HV substations and grid connections, which are fundamental to powering hyperscale data centre campuses.
The Role
Reporting to the Senior Project Manager and Project Director, you will take responsibility for the successful planning, coordination and delivery of HV substation packages from design through construction, energisation and handover.
Working in a client-side/PMC environment, you will coordinate utility providers, EPC contractors, consultants and key stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, on programme and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the delivery of HV substation and grid connection packages supporting large-scale data centre developments.
- Coordinate design, procurement, construction, testing and energisation activities.
- Act as the primary interface between the client, utility providers, design consultants and principal contractors.
- Monitor programme, cost, quality and project risks throughout the delivery lifecycle.
- Review contractor performance and ensure works are delivered in accordance with contractual requirements and project milestones.
- Chair progress meetings and provide regular reporting to senior project stakeholders.
- Manage project governance, risk registers, change control and commercial reporting.
- Coordinate closely with civil, structural, MEP and commissioning teams to ensure successful integration of the electrical infrastructure into the wider project.
- Ensure compliance with German regulations, utility standards and health & safety requirements.
- Support project commissioning, energisation and final handover activities.
About You
- 8-15 years' experience delivering HV electrical infrastructure or utility projects, with at least 3-5 years' experience as a Project Manager.
- Proven experience managing HV substations, grid connections or transmission & distribution projects (typically 110kV-400kV).
- Experience working on data centres, renewable energy, utilities, power generation, transmission or major infrastructure projects.
- Previous experience within a Project Management Consultancy (PMC), engineering consultancy, EPC contractor or client-side environment.
- Strong understanding of project controls, programme management, commercial management and contract administration.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary contractors and consultants throughout the project lifecycle.
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering or a related discipline.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Fluent English is essential; German language skills would be advantageous but are not essential.
Desirable Experience
- Data centre or mission critical project experience.
- Experience working with German utility providers and grid operators.
- Knowledge of FIDIC or NEC contracts.
- Experience managing utility approvals, testing and energisation activities.
- Professional accreditation such as PMP, APM, Prince2 or equivalent.
