Our client is an established and growing technology services organisation providing engineering support to customers across the UK and who have come back to us to find more suitable candidates for them.

DUE TO THE NATURE OF THIS RECRUITMENT CONSULTANCY, WE ARE ONLY ABLE TO REPRESENT INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EX MILITARY.

They are now looking to recruit a Field Engineer based in the Birmingham / Midlands area to join their expanding engineering team.

This is a hands-on, customer-facing role that would particularly suit someone who enjoys working independently, travelling to different customer locations and solving practical technical problems.

We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals who are seeking their first step into a communications, IT, networking, electronics or technical engineering background who are looking to develop a long-term civilian engineering career.

As a Field Engineer, you will be responsible for attending customer sites throughout your region to install, maintain, configure and troubleshoot a range of IT, networking and associated hardware.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Configuring equipment in accordance with technical specifications and customer requirements.
• Testing completed installations to ensure equipment is fully operational before leaving site.
• Installing and configuring associated camera and footfall-monitoring equipment where required.
• Diagnosing and resolving technical faults during installation, maintenance and break-fix activities.
• Escalating more complex technical problems when appropriate.
• Managing your own workload, travel and appointments to meet customer service levels and response times.
• Maintaining accurate job records, asset information, photographs, test results and technical documentation.
• Liaising with customers and the central Service Desk to provide clear updates and ensure a professional service.

Ideally, you will have experience or knowledge in some of the following:
• IT networking and associated hardware.
• Network cabling and connectivity.
• Installation, maintenance or technical field support.
• Fault diagnosis and structured problem solving.
• Working independently at customer or operational sites.
• Cisco or similar networking equipment.
• Completing technical documentation accurately.
• Working to deadlines, service levels and operational standards.

A full clean UK driving licence is essential and existing SC clearance would be advantageous but are not essential requirements.

Experience involving communications equipment, IT systems, networks, electronics, equipment installation, technical maintenance or fault diagnosis could transfer particularly well.

Just as importantly, the client is looking for someone who is reliable, organised, comfortable working independently and able to communicate professionally with customers.

The ability to remain calm when things do not go according to plan, diagnose problems methodically and take ownership of getting the job completed properly will be highly valued.

On-Call & Working Hours
The standard working week is 37.5 hours and following training and familiarisation, you will join the engineering on-call rota, typically one week in every four. Which will attract an on-call allowance of £3 – 4k per year on top on the £30k base salary. There is also overtime on offer which can significantly increase your take home pay, and a company vehicle and fuel card are also provided, other benefits include, 25 days holiday plus bank holidays, company pension scheme, life assurance,

On-Going Training & Career Development

This is not simply a role where you are expected to remain at the same level indefinitely.

The client offers structured induction, accompanied site visits and role-specific technical development. The original career pathway provides progression from Field Engineer into Senior Field Engineer / Technical Specialist, with longer-term opportunities to move towards Lead Engineer or Regional Engineering Manager positions.
