Senior Quantity Surveyor - Civil Engineering / Remediation

Location: Cardiff, Reading or Warrington

Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of secured projects nationwide, a leading contractor within the civil engineering and remediation sector is seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join its expanding commercial team.

 

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially astute Quantity Surveyor with experience in civil engineering, remediation, enabling works, or brownfield development projects to take ownership of a diverse portfolio of projects across the UK. While the role can be based from Cardiff, Reading, or Warrington, occasional travel to live project sites will be required.

 

The Role

As a Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will play a key role in the commercial management of projects from tender stage through to final account, ensuring cost control, risk management, and commercial performance are maintained throughout the project lifecycle.

 

Key Responsibilities

Commercial Management:
Manage projects from tender award through to final account settlement.
Prepare and maintain budgets, cost plans, forecasts, and financial reports.
Monitor project performance and provide regular commercial updates.
Identify, assess, and manage commercial risks and opportunities.
Attend commercial and project progress meetings.
Provide commercial input on design developments and construction methodologies.
 

Procurement & Subcontract Management:
Procure and manage specialist subcontractors.
Negotiate subcontract agreements and allocate commercial risk appropriately.
Administer subcontractor payments, variations, and final accounts.
 

Valuations & Payments:
Prepare and submit interim valuations.
Assess subcontractor applications and certify payments.
Monitor project cash flow and financial performance.
Support accurate project reporting and forecasting.
 

Variations & Change Management:
Identify, price, and negotiate variations and compensation events.
Maintain detailed records to support claims and change control processes.
Manage contractual change in accordance with NEC and other relevant contracts.
 

Cost Reporting:
Produce monthly Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs).
Forecast project outcomes, margins, and final account positions.
Report commercial performance to senior stakeholders.
Work closely with operational and technical teams to ensure accurate cost management.
 

About You

Essential Requirements:
Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within civil engineering, remediation, infrastructure, or related sectors.
Strong knowledge of commercial management and contract administration.
Working knowledge of NEC and/or JCT contracts.
Excellent commercial awareness with strong risk and change management skills.
Strong negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management abilities.
Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
 

Desirable Experience:
Experience working for a civil engineering or remediation contractor.
Exposure to brownfield development, enabling works, earthworks, or environmental remediation projects.
Experience delivering complex, multi-site projects across the UK.
MRICS qualified or actively working towards chartership.
