Fire and Security Engineer
Role Overview
A Fire and Security Engineer installs, commissions, services, maintains, and repairs fire detection, fire alarm, and electronic security systems to ensure compliance with relevant standards, legislation, and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Installation & Commissioning
- Install fire alarm systems (conventional, addressable, wireless)
- Install security systems including:
- Intruder alarms
- CCTV systems
- Access control systems
- Door entry / intercom systems
- Commission systems in line with manufacturer specifications and industry standards (e.g. BS 5839, BS EN standards)
- Program and configure control panels, detectors, cameras, and peripherals
- Complete system handover, testing, and client demonstrations
2. Maintenance & Servicing
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) visits
- Test and inspect systems to ensure full operational compliance
- Identify worn or faulty components and recommend repairs or upgrades
- Complete service documentation and certification accurately
- Ensure systems remain compliant with fire safety and insurance requirements
3. Fault Finding & Repairs
- Diagnose system faults efficiently and accurately
- Repair or replace defective components
- Provide emergency call-out support where required
- Minimise system downtime and disruption to the client
- Liaise with technical support and manufacturers when necessary
4. Compliance & Standards
- Ensure all work complies with relevant legislation and standards, including:
- BS 5839 (Fire detection and alarm systems)
- BS 7671 (Wiring Regulations)
- BS EN 50131 (Intruder alarms)
- Health & Safety at Work Act
- Follow company procedures, quality standards, and risk assessments
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulations and industry best practice
5. Health & Safety
- Work in accordance with site-specific and company H&S policies
- Carry out risk assessments and method statements (RAMS)
- Use PPE and safe working practices at all times
- Ensure safe isolation of electrical systems when required
6. Customer Service & Communication
- Communicate clearly with clients, site managers, and end users
- Provide technical advice and system usage guidance
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude on site
- Build positive working relationships and represent the company positively
7. Documentation & Reporting
- Complete job sheets, service reports, and certificates accurately
- Record faults, actions taken, and recommendations
- Update asset registers and system records
- Use job management software or service portals where applicable
8. Continuous Development
- Attend manufacturer and industry training courses
- Keep skills and certifications up to date
- Adapt to new technologies and system developments
Optional / Senior Responsibilities (if applicable)
- Supervising apprentices or junior engineers
- Conducting system surveys and quotations
- Managing small projects or installations
- Liaising with suppliers and subcontractors
- Participating in on-call or standby rotas
Typical Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with fire and security systems
- Electrical or electronic engineering background
- Relevant certifications (e.g. FIA units, manufacturer training)
- ECS / CSCS card (where required)
- Full UK driving licence (often essential)
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
