EN Teaching Assistant (Secondary School) – Durham

Are you passionate about supporting young people with additional needs and helping them achieve success in education? We are currently recruiting for a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and inclusive secondary school in Durham. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of students while gaining valuable experience within a school setting.

The Role

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to support students with a range of special educational needs. You will help remove barriers to learning, encourage positive engagement, and support students both academically and emotionally throughout the school day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to students with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
  • Support pupils with a range of additional needs, including Autism (ASC), ADHD, SEMH, and moderate learning difficulties.
  • Assist students in managing their emotions and behaviours, promoting a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships that encourage confidence, independence, and engagement in learning.
  • Work alongside teachers to adapt learning activities and provide targeted classroom support.
  • Support students during lessons, breaktimes, and other school activities where required.
  • Contribute to classroom organisation and behaviour management strategies.

Requirements

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEN, either within education, care, youth work, or a similar setting.
  • A patient, resilient, and nurturing approach.

  • The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a wider school team.
