Mechanical Project Director – Data Centre Construction

I am currently on the lookout for an experienced Mechanical Project Director for a major data centre construction project in West Frankfurt, Germany.
I am acting on behalf of a well-established and respected business operating heavily within the Data Centre and Critical Infrastructure sector, with major projects commencing across Europe and continued growth within its Data Centre division.
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior mechanical professional to take overall leadership of the mechanical delivery on a major data centre project, working alongside the Project Director, Engineering, Construction, Commissioning and Commercial teams.
Key Responsibilities of this Mechanical Project Director Role:

Provide overall leadership and management of the mechanical project delivery.

Take responsibility for the successful delivery of all mechanical systems and associated works.

Lead Mechanical Package Managers, Construction Managers, subcontractors and specialist vendors.

Develop and implement the mechanical delivery strategy in line with the overall project programme.

Oversee mechanical engineering, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning and handover.
-
Ensure mechanical works are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to the required quality standards.

Coordinate mechanical activities with electrical, structural, architectural and other project disciplines.

Monitor programme performance and ensure key mechanical milestones are achieved.

Identify programme risks, technical issues and delivery constraints and implement mitigation strategies.

Provide senior-level oversight of subcontractor performance, productivity and delivery.
-
Review and approve key technical submissions, methodologies and construction plans.
-
Manage design changes, technical queries and complex project interfaces.

Lead senior project meetings and provide regular progress updates to the Project Director and client team.

Oversee mechanical quality, inspection and testing activities.
-
Ensure mechanical systems are completed and ready for commissioning in line with the project programme.

Work closely with the commissioning team to ensure a smooth transition from construction to commissioning.

Oversee punch-list, snagging, close-out and turnover activities.
-
Ensure all mechanical documentation and handover requirements are completed.

Promote and maintain the highest standards of Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental performance.
Mechanical Scope:
Experience across major data centre mechanical systems, including:

Chilled water and cooling systems
-
HVAC systems
-
CRAH / CRAC units
-
Mechanical plant and equipment
-
Pumps and associated pipework
-
Hydronic systems
-
Ventilation systems
-
Domestic water and drainage
-
Fire protection systems
-
Mechanical controls and BMS interfaces
Essential Criteria for this Mechanical Project Director Role:
-
Proven experience as a Mechanical Project Director, Mechanical Director or Senior Mechanical Manager on major construction projects.

Extensive experience delivering large-scale Data Centre or similarly complex critical infrastructure projects.

Strong technical understanding of mechanical construction and building services.
-
Proven experience managing large mechanical teams, subcontractors and specialist vendors.
-
Experience overseeing mechanical delivery from design and procurement through construction, commissioning and handover.
-
Strong understanding of project programme, commercial, quality and HSE requirements.
-
Demonstrable experience managing complex project interfaces and multiple stakeholders.
-
Strong leadership, decision-making and stakeholder management skills.
-
Ability to lead delivery within a fast-paced, high-pressure data centre environment.
-
Previous European Data Centre experience is highly advantageous.
-
Fluent English is essential; German language skills would be advantageous.

EU Passport or existing German residency required.
