1:1 Behaviour & SEND Support Assistant – Gateshead

Are You Calm, Patient and Confident Supporting Challenging Behaviour?

A welcoming SEND primary school in Gateshead is seeking a dedicated 1:1 Support Assistant to work with a Year 1 pupil who requires additional support with behaviour, emotional regulation and engagement.

This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate or experienced support worker who wants to build practical experience within SEND and primary education.

Your Role

You'll provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day, helping the pupil navigate the classroom and engage positively with learning.

Your day-to-day responsibilities could include:

  • Supporting the pupil during lessons
  • Encouraging positive behaviour
  • Helping manage challenging or dysregulated behaviour
  • Supporting emotional regulation
  • Encouraging communication and social interaction
  • Developing a positive and trusting relationship
  • Helping the pupil engage with classroom activities
  • Promoting independence and confidence
  • Working alongside teachers and support staff

Consistency will be key. You'll help provide the structure and encouragement the pupil needs to feel safe and ready to learn.

About You

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Confident communicating with young children
  • Able to build strong relationships
  • Interested in SEND and behaviour support

Graduates in Psychology, Education, Childhood Studies, Criminology or related subjects would be particularly suited to this opportunity.

Experience with children or young people is beneficial but not essential.
