Job Type: Full Time, Term Time Only
Start Date: September 2026
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, school hours
Pay: £98–£120 per day, depending on experience

Protocol Education are looking for a Behaviour & SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist setting in Gateshead.

This role would suit someone who is naturally confident, patient and resilient and who enjoys working with young people who may need additional support with their behaviour, emotions and engagement in education.

You don't necessarily need to have worked in a school before. Experience in youth work, residential care, sports coaching, mentoring or support work could transfer extremely well.

The role will involve:

  • Supporting pupils with SEMH needs
  • Building positive and trusting relationships
  • Acting as a positive role model
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support
  • Supporting pupils to engage with lessons
  • Encouraging positive behaviour
  • Helping pupils manage emotions
  • Supporting pupils during transitions
  • Mentoring and encouraging young people
  • Developing confidence and resilience
  • Working alongside teachers and pastoral staff
  • Supporting pupils during less structured parts of the day

You will need to be able to remain calm and consistent when faced with challenging behaviour and understand the importance of positive relationships and appropriate boundaries.

The ideal candidate could come from a background in:

  • Residential Care
  • Social Care
  • Mentoring
  • Community Support

Previous SEMH experience is desirable but not essential.

Driving is essential

Due to the location of the setting, candidates must have a full UK driving licence and access to their own car.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
