Graduate 1:1 SEND Support Assistant – Gateshead

Could You Help a Young Pupil Thrive at School?

A welcoming SEND primary school in Gateshead is looking for a caring and resilient 1:1 SEND Support Assistant to work closely with a Year 1 pupil who can display challenging behaviour.

This role would be particularly suited to a Psychology, Education, Childhood Studies or related graduate looking to gain valuable experience working with children and develop their understanding of SEND, behaviour and child development.

The Role

You will provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day, helping the pupil feel settled, access their learning and develop positive relationships.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 support
  • Encouraging participation in classroom activities
  • Supporting positive behaviour
  • Helping the pupil manage emotions and regulate their behaviour
  • Developing a trusting relationship
  • Encouraging positive social interactions
  • Supporting independence and confidence
  • Working closely with the class teacher and wider support team

About You

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Patient, calm and empathetic
  • Resilient when managing challenging behaviour
  • Confident communicating with children and adults
  • Passionate about supporting children with SEND
  • Interested in child development and inclusive education
  • Able to build positive and trusting relationships

A degree in Psychology, Education, Childhood Studies or a similar subject would be particularly relevant. Previous experience with children is beneficial but not essential.
