A specialist SEND school in Gateshead is looking for a caring and motivated Speech & Language Support Assistant to join their team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Speech & Language graduate, Communication graduate, aspiring Speech & Language Therapist or experienced SEND professional to gain valuable hands-on experience supporting pupils with communication needs.
Location: Gateshead
Hours: 8:30am – 3:30pm, Monday–Friday
Start Date: ASAP
What You'll Do
You'll support pupils across the school who experience speech, language and communication difficulties.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Delivering 1:1 and small-group communication interventions
- Supporting pupils with speech and language development
- Developing vocabulary and comprehension
- Encouraging expressive language
- Supporting social communication and interaction
- Helping pupils communicate their needs
- Using visual and communication-based resources
- Supporting access to classroom learning
- Working alongside teachers and SEND staff
- Monitoring pupil progress and engagement
The Pupils
You may support children with a range of additional needs, including Autism, communication difficulties, learning needs and complex SEND.
Some pupils may be non-verbal or have limited verbal communication, making consistent and individualised support particularly important.
About You
We're looking for someone who is:
- Experienced or qualified in Speech & Language, Communication or SEND
- Patient and encouraging
- Confident supporting children with additional needs
- Comfortable delivering interventions
- A strong communicator
- Able to build trusting relationships
- Passionate about helping children develop their independence

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
