Senior Quantity Surveyor (HV / Substations)

Location: Glasgow Permanent Position

 

About the Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join a leading engineering contractor delivering major infrastructure and high-voltage (HV) projects across the UK and Europe. This role offers the chance to work on a significant pipeline of secured projects for the next five years and beyond, supporting the successful delivery of large-scale substation, switchgear, and cable installation projects. You'll join a collaborative, high-performing team and play a key role in the commercial management of complex engineering projects from inception through to completion. The Role

The Senior Quantity Surveyor will support the commercial delivery of high-voltage infrastructure projects, with a particular focus on substations, switchgear installations, and cable works. The role encompasses cost management, contract administration, financial reporting, change management, and risk mitigation to ensure projects are delivered safely, on programme, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

 

Key Responsibilities
Prepare and manage project budgets, forecasts, BOQs, cost plans, and profit reports.
Lead and participate in commercial meetings with clients, subcontractors, and internal project teams.
Produce detailed commercial reports and provide regular cost and performance updates to project leadership.
Manage subcontractor accounts, including interim valuations, payment applications, payment certificates, variations, and final accounts.
Administer contractual obligations and ensure compliance with project and client requirements.
Prepare and submit interim applications, valuations, and final accounts, ensuring all works, variations, remeasures, dayworks, and contractual claims are accurately captured.
Identify and manage commercial risks, ensuring timely escalation and reporting to senior management.
Work closely with Planning and Project Management teams to ensure accurate progress reporting and commercial alignment.
Assess, value, and negotiate change orders, compensation events, and site instructions.
Maintain accurate project records and supporting documentation for all commercial activities.
Monitor project costs and cash flow, driving commercial performance throughout the project lifecycle.
Negotiate commercial matters with clients, consultants, and subcontractors as required.
Contribute positively to project success through a proactive, professional, and solutions-focused approach.
Ensure compliance with all information security, company, and client procedures.
 

Requirements
Degree-qualified in Quantity Surveying, Construction Economics, Commercial Management, or a related discipline.
Minimum 5 years' experience in a Quantity Surveying role within the construction, engineering, utilities, power, or infrastructure sectors.
Previous experience working on HV projects, substations, electrical infrastructure, or major engineering projects is highly desirable.
Strong understanding of contract administration and commercial management principles.
NEC3/NEC4 contract experience is essential.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
Strong analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
 

Desirable Experience
Experience with substation construction, switchgear installations, cable works, or power transmission and distribution projects.
Technical background in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Installation, Instrumentation, or a related discipline.
Experience preparing and managing contractual claims, variations, compensation events, and final accounts.
Strong understanding of project planning and scheduling and the associated commercial impacts.
