Are you an experienced Teaching Assistant looking for a role where you can take on greater responsibility and develop your career within a specialist SEMH setting?

Protocol Education are recruiting an enthusiastic and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Newcastle upon Tyne, supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced TA who wants to develop their skills, with the potential to take on additional HLTA-style responsibilities once established within the school.

The Role

You will work closely with pupils who may experience:

  • SEMH needs
  • Challenging or distressed behaviour
  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • Anxiety and low confidence
  • Social and communication difficulties
  • Barriers to learning
  • Difficulties engaging within a mainstream classroom

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support
  • Supporting pupils during lessons
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and engagement
  • Building trusted and professional relationships with pupils
  • Supporting emotional regulation and wellbeing
  • Delivering planned interventions
  • Helping pupils develop independence
  • Supporting literacy and written communication
  • Monitoring pupil engagement and progress
  • Working closely with teachers and wider school staff

Opportunity to Take on HLTA Responsibilities

Once you are established within the role, there will be scope to take on additional responsibilities similar to an HLTA position, including:

  • Writing pupil progress reports
  • Maintaining accurate pupil records
  • Recording behaviour, engagement and progress
  • Providing written feedback to teachers
  • Contributing to review meetings
  • Supporting intervention planning
  • Monitoring individual targets
  • Preparing learning resources and activities
  • Taking responsibility for small-group interventions
  • Supporting and sharing good practice with less experienced staff

This could be a fantastic opportunity for a Level 3 TA, experienced Teaching Assistant or aspiring HLTA who wants to build their experience and take the next step in their education career.

About You

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Experienced in SEMH, SEND or education
  • Confident supporting pupils with challenging behaviour
  • Calm, consistent and resilient
  • Patient and able to build positive relationships
  • Organised with strong written communication skills
  • Comfortable recording and reporting pupil progress
  • Able to work effectively as part of a wider school team
  • Keen to develop and take on additional responsibility
