Graduate SEN Support Assistant – 1:1 Newcastle

Could your degree be the first step towards a career supporting children with additional needs?

A specialist SEN school in Newcastle is seeking an enthusiastic Graduate SEN Support Assistant to provide 1:1 support to a pupil and help them thrive both academically and personally.

This role is particularly suited to graduates interested in Psychology, Child Development, Education, Behaviour or SEND, offering the chance to put your academic knowledge into practice within a specialist school environment.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Working 1:1 with a pupil throughout the school day
  • Supporting access to learning and classroom activities
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and engagement
  • Supporting emotional regulation
  • Developing the pupil's confidence and independence
  • Helping with transitions and changes in routine
  • Using appropriate communication strategies
  • Building a strong and professional relationship with the pupil
  • Working alongside teachers and specialist SEN staff

Could This Be You?

You could be a recent graduate with a degree in Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Education, Childhood Studies or a related subject.

Most importantly, you'll be:

  • Patient and understanding
  • Calm and consistent
  • Confident communicating with children
  • Passionate about SEND
  • Interested in behaviour and child development
  • Reliable and professional
  • Willing to learn and develop your skills

Previous SEN experience is desirable but not essential. Experience working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals would be an advantage.

What You'll Gain

Working in a specialist SEN school will give you practical experience that can be difficult to gain from a degree alone.

You'll develop your understanding of behaviour, communication, emotional regulation and individual learning needs, making this an excellent stepping stone towards a career in psychology, teaching, therapy or wider education and support services.
