Job Description

The Art and Design Technology Technician provides essential technical support to teaching staff and students within the art and design technology department. The role involves preparing and maintaining materials, equipment and resources, ensuring a safe working environment, and assisting with the practical delivery of lessons and projects. The technician contributes to the smooth operation of the department by managing stock, repairing tools and machinery, and supporting creative activities in line with curricular requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare materials, equipment and resources required for practical lessons in art, design and technology.
  • Maintain and organise tools, machinery and workspaces to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Support teaching staff during lessons by setting up equipment and demonstrating techniques where required.
  • Assist students with the use of equipment and materials, providing guidance on safe and effective practises.
  • Manage stock levels, order supplies and maintain accurate records of materials and equipment usage.
  • Carry out routine maintenance and minor repairs on tools, machinery and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including risk assessments and safe storage of hazardous materials.
  • Keep up to date with developments in art and design technology to provide relevant technical advice and support.
  • Support departmental events or exhibitions by preparing displays and assisting with logistical arrangements.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant technical qualification in art, design, technology or a related discipline.
  • Certification in health and safety or willingness to undertake relevant training.

Education

Minimum of a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent practical experience.

Experience

  • Proven experience working as a technician in an educational setting or similar environment.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of art and design technology materials and equipment.
  • Experience of stock management and resource ordering.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practises within practical workshop or studio environments.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong practical skills in handling and maintaining tools, machinery and materials.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety legislation relevant to art and design technology.
  • Effective communication skills to liaise with teaching staff and support students.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proactive approach to problem-solving and resource management.
  • Competent IT skills for maintaining records and managing stock databases.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional training or certification in specialised areas such as textiles, ceramics, or digital design technology.
  • First aid qualification.
  • Experience with health and safety audits or risk assessment procedures.

Working Conditions

The role is based primarily within workshop and studio environments which may involve exposure to dust, fumes, noise and the use of potentially hazardous tools and substances. The technician is required to follow strict safety protocols at all times. The role may involve manual handling, standing for extended periods, and occasional lifting of heavy materials or equipment. Standard working hours apply, with occasional flexibility required to support departmental events or deadlines.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
