Our client is a specialist civil engineering contractor delivering piling and foundation solutions across a range of construction and infrastructure projects.

The business works across a variety of piling disciplines, providing design, estimating and construction solutions to meet client requirements.

The company is continuing to develop its design and estimating capabilities and is looking for an experienced Design Engineer to support new tenders and live projects.

About the Role

We are looking for a Design Engineer to join the Estimating and Design team, combining technical design expertise with commercial and estimating skills.

You will work on piling and foundation solutions from initial tender through to project delivery, interpreting drawings and specifications, developing designs and preparing accurate cost estimates.

The role also involves working directly with clients and site teams, attending site when required and developing solutions for a range of piling schemes including sheet piles, king posts, driven piles and bored piles.

The key responsibilities for this Design Engineer role are:

• Interpret engineering drawings, specifications and tender documents

• Develop piling and foundation design solutions for tender submissions

• Prepare geotechnical and structural designs for retaining walls and piling systems

• Produce cost estimates from bills of quantities, drawings and client enquiries

• Review tender requirements and identify project risks and opportunities

• Carry out site inspections with the Operations team

• Assess site conditions and identify potential construction issues

• Prepare technical and commercial information for tender submissions

• Liaise with clients to understand requirements and provide technical solutions

• Support projects through design development and construction

• Work closely with estimating, commercial and operations teams

• Ensure designs comply with relevant legislation and company procedures

• Maintain high standards of quality, health, safety and environmental performance

• Manage multiple tenders and projects against deadlines

Experience required for this Design Engineer role are:

• Minimum 5 years' experience within heavy civil engineering

• Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience

• Proven experience in piling, foundations or related civil engineering design

• Experience using design software such as AutoCAD, WALLAP, OASYS or similar

• Strong understanding of geotechnical and structural design principles

• Experience producing estimates or supporting the tender process

• Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications and bills of quantities

• Strong numerical and analytical skills

• Good understanding of CDM Regulations 2015

• Strong communication and client-facing skills

• Ability to manage deadlines and work independently

Desirable knowledge, skills and experience for this Design Engineer role are:

• Experience with sheet piling, king post walls, driven piles or bored piles

• Experience with fully embedded, cantilever and propped retaining wall solutions

• Previous site-based construction experience

• Experience managing projects from tender through to delivery

• Knowledge of construction price trends and market conditions

• Professional qualification or membership of a relevant engineering body

• Experience working within a commercial or estimating environment
