Financial Controller
Colson Group are seeking a Multi-Entity Financial Controller for their UK business.
This is a hybrid role, with 2 days working from home and the remaining 3 days per week on-site, split between Stourbridge and West Bromwich. There may be occasional European travel.
The businesses are already well run. This isn't a turnaround. Two established UK entities, both properly controlled, both performing. What they need now is a Financial Controller who can make the finance function faster and sharper without disturbing what already works well.
If you're looking for a straightforward accounting seat, this probably isn't for you. If you want genuine ownership of the numbers across two manufacturing businesses, a direct line to two Managing Directors, and the scope to change how finance actually operates, read on.
What you'll be taking on
Two legal entities. Two operational sites. Two ERP systems. One finance function that needs to move quicker, report better and support the business more directly.
You'll own the monthly management accounts, balance sheet control, intercompany accounting, consolidation and Group reporting across both entities. You'll lead budgeting and forecasting, and write commentary people actually read because it tells them something useful. You'll keep a close eye on cash and working capital, not just report on it after the fact.
The financial control is the entry ticket, not the job itself. The job is what you do with it: partner the Managing Directors properly, challenge assumptions where they need challenging, and get finance out from behind the reports and into the decisions that shape the business.
What success looks like
- Month-end close gets faster and simpler, without control or audit quality slipping.
- Forecasts are credible, not optimistic. Risks and opportunities surface early, not after the event.
- The Managing Directors treat finance as a genuine partner and use your insight to make decisions.
- Unnecessary differences, manual work and duplication between the two businesses are steadily removed.
- Your team has clear ownership and accountability, so more time is directed toward analysis, improvement and business support.
- Repeatable, scalable way of working are built, so personal intervention in every process is not required.
Who this role will suit
You're a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with solid post-qualification experience in a Financial Controller or comparable senior finance role. Multi-entity accounting is familiar ground, and working across more than one ERP system doesn't faze you.
You've been a credible finance partner to a Managing Director or General Manager before, not simply someone who circulates a monthly pack. You can hold your own with people who aren't from finance and make the numbers matter to them.
You've improved a finance function that was already in decent shape, not just repaired one that was broken. Faster close, less manual effort, better use of systems and data - that's familiar territory for you.
Experience in a private-equity-backed business, or another environment with real accountability for performance and cash, would be a strong advantage. Time spent in a multi-site, engineering, distribution or manufacturing environment is useful, though not essential.
