BSL Teaching Assistant – Sunderland
Protocol Education are looking for a BSL-skilled Teaching Assistant to support pupils within a specialist SEN provision in Sunderland.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who has a good understanding of British Sign Language (BSL) and wants to use their communication skills to help pupils access learning, build confidence and develop their independence.
The Role
You will work alongside teachers and the wider SEND team to support pupils throughout the school day.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Using BSL to support communication and understanding
- Supporting pupils to access lessons and activities
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support
- Helping pupils develop communication skills
- Supporting social interaction
- Reinforcing classroom instructions
- Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour
- Encouraging independence
- Supporting transitions throughout the school day
- Working closely with teachers and other professionals
- Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils
We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will:
- Have BSL skills suitable for supporting pupils in an educational setting
- Be confident communicating with deaf or hearing-impaired pupils
- Have experience working with children or young people
- Ideally have previous SEND or school experience
- Be patient, calm and approachable
- Be confident adapting communication to individual needs
- Have a genuine interest in supporting young people
A TA qualification or relevant SEND experience would be advantageous.
