Your figures

5 % employee and 3 % employer on earnings between £6,240 and £50,270, taken before tax.

How take-home pay is calculated

Three deductions stand between the gross salary and the money you receive.

Income tax
The first £12,570 is tax-free (the allowance shrinks by £1 for every £2 earned above £100,000). The next £37,700 is taxed at 20 %, income up to £125,140 at 40 % and anything above at 45 %.
National Insurance
Employees pay 8 % on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year and 2 % above that. Your employer pays a further 15 % on everything above £5,000, which is why the total employer cost is shown too.
Workplace pension
If you are auto-enrolled, 5 % of qualifying earnings (£6,240 to £50,270) comes off before tax and the employer adds 3 %. Switch it on to see the effect.

Frequently asked questions

What is the take-home pay on a £35,000 salary?

About £2,393 a month in 2026/27: £4,486 income tax and £1,794 National Insurance come off the £35,000, leaving £28,720 a year before any pension contribution.

Why does my payslip differ from the calculator?

Tax codes other than 1257L, student loan repayments, salary sacrifice, benefits in kind, Scottish tax bands or pay spread unevenly over the year all change the monthly figure. The calculator applies the standard rules to an even annual salary.

Does the calculator include student loans?

Not yet. Plan 2 repayments are 9 % of income above the plan threshold, so subtract that from the net figure if you repay a loan.
