Net to gross salary calculator
Start from the take-home pay you need and find the gross salary that delivers it under the 2026/27 income tax and National Insurance rules.
- The figures behind it · Personal allowance
- £12,570
- Basic / higher / additional rate
- 20 / 40 / 45 %
- Employee NI
- 8 % to £50,270, then 2 %
How the gross is found
The calculator runs the gross-to-net rules backwards until the net matches.
- Same rules as the payslip
- Income tax with the £12,570 allowance and the 20/40/45 % bands, employee National Insurance at 8 % and 2 %, optional pension. Nothing is approximated with a flat percentage.
- Solved numerically
- Deductions change with the salary, so there is no single formula. The calculator narrows the gross down until the net is right to the penny.
- Employer cost included
- You also see what the salary costs the employer with 15 % employer National Insurance, useful when negotiating a total package.

Frequently asked questions
What gross salary gives £2,500 net a month?
- About £36,800 a year in 2026/27 without a pension contribution (£36,778 to the pound). With the auto-enrolment pension you need about £38,600.
Is the result the salary I should ask for?
- It is the gross that yields your target net under standard rules. Add a margin for pension, student loan or benefits that reduce take-home pay.
Why is the gross more than the net plus tax?
- Because National Insurance is deducted as well as income tax, and both rise with the salary. Every extra pound of net above the basic-rate band needs about £1.72 of gross.
